Wayne Rooney on WWE: Roy Keane's reaction after he slapped Wade Barrett in 2015 | OneFootball

On November 9, 2015, WWE headed to Manchester for an episode of Monday Night Raw.

Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney was in attendance and had a front-row seat for the event.

The Englishman then got involved in a heated altercation with Wade Barrett.

Barrett, a Preston North End, took to Twitter to berate Rooney after their FA Cup clash in February 2015.

Rooney scored a penalty in United’s 3-1 victory. Barrett accused him of diving for the spot-kick.

And Barrett confronted him later that year on Monday Night Raw.

“In this ring are two men who can be easily be described as championship material. Which is, of course, more than can be said of Wayne Rooney and Manchester United,” he said, per the Daily Mail.

“I’d hate for your little boy to sit there and watch his own father fail. Because let’s face it, he gets to experience that every single time you step on a football pitch.”

Barrett then went face-to-face with Rooney but was sent to the floor with a fierce slap. Watch the moment below…

Two weeks later, Rooney produced an underwhelming performance as United drew 0-0 with PSV in the Champions League.

He said: “You look at Wayne’s legacy at Manchester United, it’s absolutely fantastic. His goals record – brilliant.

“But now he’s the captain, there’s a bit more responsibility and I think he’s got to do a lot more.

“I always question some players, what are they doing off the field. I saw Wayne last week getting involved in slapping a wrestler and I’m thinking ‘why is he getting involved in all that nonsense?’ There’s no benefit to him.

“I’d have a look at that.”

Asked if off-field issues were hindering his displays for United, Keane added: “Well, it’s certainly not helping him!

“I wouldn’t begrudge a player for going out and enjoying himself but if you’re not at it yourself, you’ve got to look, and he’s got to lead by example and he didn’t do that tonight.

“He doesn’t look sharp, he looks off. Mentally he doesn’t look sharp, physically he doesn’t look in great shape, so he just needs to have a look at himself.”

Classic Keane. The Irishman was teammates with Rooney but that didn’t stop him holding back at all.
