Former Manchester United and England forward, Wayne Rooney has talked about the importance of this World Cup for the legacy of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.
Speaking to the Indian newspaper The Times of India in an exclusive interview, Rooney was asked about his thoughts on the pressure over Lionel Messi considering his last World Cup and his team Argentina. In response to the question, the English Football legend said: “I’m sure he’s used to dealing with expectations. The idea of leaving a legacy is surely going through his mind.”
Wayne Rooney further remarked that this World Cup is of utmost crucial to his former teammate Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi as this might be the last and only chance to cement legacies with the most prestigious honour: “I would love to see either Messi or (Cristiano) Ronaldo win the World Cup. It would be a fitting end to their incredible careers. I’m sure Messi will be doing everything he can to try and help Argentina win.”
Rooney’s relationship with Ronaldo has been the talk of the town in recent days, especially following the Portuguese’s interview with Piers Morgan. The current United man had spoken about how despite being almost as old as himself, Rooney isn’t as physically sound and the comments had attracted negative reactions from many. But it doesn’t seem as if Rooney has anything against his ex-United teammate, who will look to star in the World Cup for Fernando Santos’ side.
