Derby County manager Wayne Rooney has suggested that the Rams administrators need to do all they can to sort out a takeover deal with Chris Kirchner as soon as possible.

Kirchner was in the stadium to witness the Rams fall to a late 2-1 defeat against QPR on Monday night as Derby failed to see out the game after taking a 1-0 lead through Tom Lawrence. The loss leaves Rooney’s side 19 points adrift of safety and it is looking ever more likely that whoever takes over the club will be doing so with them in League One next term.

Rooney has already recently insisted that he is wanting to remain committed to Derby even if the Rams were to suffer relegation down to the third tier of English football. Whilst it is also widely reported that the Derby boss has held talks with Kirchner about the prospect of him taking over the club ahead of a possible deal being reached between him and the administrators.

The performance against QPR showed a team that have not given up hope of survival, but their inability to hold onto their lead leaves them in a very difficult position to even attempt to mount some sort of survival bid during the rest of the campaign.

Speaking to Derbyshire Live following the Rams’ loss against QPR, Rooney insisted that Kirchner remains committed to taking over Derby and he urged the club’s administrators to do all that they can to ensure that a takeover can be completed as soon as possible.

He said: “I have shown my commitment to the club, he has shown his commitment.

“Of course I understand it is difficult, there are obstacles to get over and I think for everyone’s sake the quicker this can get done it makes my job easier and it allows me to start putting things in place.

“Hopefully it can get done as soon as possible.

“I have had conversations with him [Kirchner] and as I said his commitment is there, whether that is Championship or League One.

“I know it is a difficult job for the administrators. As they have said there are a few options on the table but for the sake of this club we need it done as quick as possible.”

The verdict

It is clear that Kirchner wants to takeover at Derby as Rooney suggests otherwise there is no way that he would be inside the stadium watching the Rams against QPR on Monday night. So, there is real hope that the club could finally get some clarity over their future in the near future if a takeover can be completed in the near future.

You have to feel for Rooney because at this stage he will just be wanting the club to provide him with some clarity about where they are going to be. It is impossible for him to build plans for January when he does not even know whether he will be under a new ownership regime by then or not.

Derby’s squad are trying in all of their matches for sure, but they are in need of some help and it does seem that they are going to get relegated but with some pride in terms of performance levels. A confirmed takeover soon might even be able to give the players fresh belief and confidence and that might help them produce a few more positive results.
