Wayne Rooney has backed Marcus Rashford to surpass his Manchester United tally of 253 goals and become the club’s all-time record goalscorer.

Rashford has been our attacking spark this season, scoring 27 goals in all competitions, but he will need to carry on that form in the future to better Rooney’s record.

On current form, I don’t think there’s a better forward player in the game, and hopefully United can make the most of that between now and the end of the season.

Rashford currently has 120 goals to his name in a United shirt, putting him 19th on the club’s all-time leading goalscoring chart.

He needs another 133 goals to match Rooney’s legendary record, but some of the Stretty News writers reckon he could hit 40 goals this season.

“I think we’ve all known about Marcus, even before he was in the first team, coming through the academy,” Rooney told CNN. “He’s a top player and he fell off a little bit over the last 18 months especially. And again, I think Ten Hag has come in and really simplified it for him.

“I’m not a player who sits on records and hopes no one breaks them. I hope he does it and the reasons why [with] him being a Manchester lad coming through the academy.

“I think it’s a great story and it means he’s been very successful with the club and been there a long time and scored a lot of goals if he does do it. So I hope he does.

“I think he certainly has the ability and the capabilities to be able to do it. I’m sure, or I hope, sometime in the next few years I’ll be able to pass that mantle onto him.”

Let us know in the comments section if you think Rashford will surpass Rooney’s tally for goals.

I guess a lot will depend on whether he signs a new long-term contract
