Watford forward Joao Pedro is keen on securing a quick return to the Premier League amid interest from Newcastle United, according to a report from the Shields Gazette.

The 20-year-old has been a big highlight of the Hornets’ previous couple of seasons, scoring nine times during the 2020/21 campaign despite his tender age and making the step up reasonably well to the top flight last term despite only managing to get on the scoresheet three times.

With this, he has been the subject of interest from elsewhere with Leeds United previously reported to have been closing in on a loan move for him, something that came as a potential surprise with the Brazilian being one of their best assets and the fact they probably wouldn’t generate much money from this agreement initially.

However, that move hasn’t been sealed and this has allowed Newcastle to swoop in, having their first offer rejected for him but are believed to be ready to launch a fresh bid to try and lure him away from Vicarage Road.

At this stage, it’s currently unclear whether the Magpies will have the funds to get this deal over the line with Rob Edwards’ side valuing him at around £35m.

But the player is keen on securing a move to the top tier and this could be a potential boost for the Tyneside outfit in their quest to sign the young forward.

The Verdict:

This is no real surprise considering he was a regular in the top flight last season – but he isn’t guaranteed to be one of the first names on the teamsheet at St James’ Park with Chris Wood and Callum Wilson also available as options.

In the long term, he could end up being one of the first names on the teamsheet on Tyneside but in the short term, it remains to be seen whether he would get a decent number of minutes under his belt.

This is why he could be best served remaining at Vicarage Road at this stage – and could put himself in the shop window by getting in and amongst the goals regularly during the 2022/23 campaign.

After that, he will then have a good chance of securing a return to the top flight regardless of whether he does it with his current side or not, so he should remain patient at this stage.

And with the Hornets thought to be more willing to cash in on teammate Ismaila Sarr than the Brazilian, the latter may need to be patient and should be fully focused on his current side with no guarantees he will move on in the next couple of weeks.
