Watford’s relegation back to the FA Women’s National League Southern Premier Division has been confirmed following this afternoon’s 2-0 defeat to Charlton Athletic at Vicarage Road.

The Golden Girls knew that they’d have to better Reading’s result against Blackburn Rovers to keep their survival dreams alive. As the action unfolded, Watford slipped to a 2-0 defeat while Reading were able to collect a point from a goalless draw in Lancashire. The results leave Watford seven points adrift of safety with just six points left to play for.

While Watford were unable to make the breakthrough against Charlton Athletic, their first half performance offered hope with the two sides going into the break deadlocked at 0-0.

The Hertfordshire side’s chances of getting a result were then dealt a major blow 11 minutes into the second half when Melissa Johnson netted the game’s opening goal for Charlton Athletic. Johnson then had the ball in the net for a second time but the goal was disallowed for offside.

Watford pushed hard to get back into the game but they were breached again in second half stoppage time when Mel Filis netted a second Charlton Athletic goal.

This afternoon’s 2-0 defeat therefore confirms Watford’s return to the FA Women’s National League Southern Premier Division. The Golden Girls return to Tier 3 after spending just one season back in the Barclays Women’s Championship.
