Watford are in talks to sign defender Wesley Hoedt from Anderlecht, a report from Belgian outlet Het Niuewsblad has claimed.

Hoedt joined Anderlecht from Southampton back in the summer of 2021, and has since gone on to make 73 appearances in all competitions for the Belgian club, scoring four goals.

However, it now looks as though the 28-year-old could be set for a return to England, in the final days of the January transfer window.

According to this latest update, negotiations over a deal for Watford to sign Hoedt are progressing well, despite the centre back training with Anderlecht today.

It is thought the deal would see Hoedt move on loan to Watford until the end of the season, when the Championship promotion chasers would have the option to make that deal permanent.

For now, the main point of discussion is said to be securing an agreement that would see Watford pay all of the player’s wages, during his time on loan with the club.

WHAT YEAR WERE THE CLUB FOUNDED?

The 28-year-old is apparently out of favour at Anderlecht, as a result of behaviour that has seen him dropped to the bench by the club.

As things stand, there are two-and-a-half years remaining on Hoedt’s contract with Anderlecht, securing his future with the club until the end of the 2024/25 season.

The Verdict

This would certainly be an interesting signing for Watford to make.

On the one hand, Hoedt’s top-flight experience in a range of different countries, does suggest he is a player who could be a reliable option in the Championship.

However, the fact that the Hornets already have a number of central defensive options, with Ryan Porteous seemingly on his way from Hibs as well, means you question whether another centre back such as Hoedt, is something they really need to prioritise.

Indeed, the suggestion he is available because of behaviour issues at Anderlecht also make you wonder whether he could create something of a distraction at Watford, meaning you question whether this a deal that is worth pursuing.
