Watford look to have been dealt a new injury blow, after centre back William Troost-Ekong confirmed he has withdrawn from Nigeria’s international camp.

On Friday, Troot-Ekong was in action for the Super Eagles in a friendly against Algeria’s B-team, ahead of a clash with the full Algerian side on Tuesday night.

However, while playing in that game, the 29-year-old picked up a injury blow that has forced him to pull out of the camp, leaving the Hornets facing a nervous wait for new on his fitness.

Taking to Twitter to provide an update on his situation on Saturday night, Troost-Ekong wrote: “Unfortunately picked up something in our game yesterday. Back home now to sort it out. All the best to the boys on Tuesday!”

Troot-Ekong has endured a frustrating time through injury since joining Watford from Udinese in the summer of 2020, making 54 appearances in all competition for the Hornets.

Just three of those have come during the current campaign, when he has more commonly been included on the bench, after a summer transfer window in which he remained at Vicarage Road, despite links with a move to Turkey.

The Verdict

This is obviously going to be something of a concern for Watford.

Even though he has not featured regularly for Rob Edwards’ side this season, Troost-Ekong has still showed on plenty of occasions, that he is a more than reliable option for the Hornets.

Indeed, given they have often used a system involving a back three this season, losing the Nigerian for any length of time, could mean Watford are short of depth in a key area for this side.

As a result, you feel they will want Troost-Ekong assessed and fit as soon as possible, as they look to improve on what has been a rather mixed start to the season.
