After drawing 1-1 against Wolves last Sunday, fans have criticised Newcastle United’s playing style and put Steve Bruce in the hot seat.

However, current Watford forward Troy Deeney has come to the aid of the manager, defending Bruce and his team’s performances when speaking to TalkSPORT according to The Transfer Tavern.

The 32-year-old forward was on Newcastle’s radar during the summer window but the club opted to sign Callum Wilson instead, as per the Athletic.

Deeney talked about the team’s squad depth and approach to playing without getting beat as strong traits of the club.

“They’ve got a really exciting player in Allan (Saint-Maximin), Ryan Fraser is obviously talented, Callum (Wilson) is obviously lightning quick,” said Deeney.

“I think obviously their main aim is to not get beat – I think you see a lot of teams now that their first thought is, ‘don’t get beat and try to hit on the counter-attack’ – and utilise Callum’s pace.”

He also emphasised that the draw against Wolves is nothing fans should be frustrated about.

“A 1-1 draw away at Wolves – a very good Wolves team and one that is trying to get in the top six this season – is a very good result.”

Despite Deeney’s defence, the next match against leaders Everton is a tough one and Bruce may continue to be under the microscope from fans.
