Could the Hornets owner compete financially in the top-flight of English football?

It is now around a decade since Gino Pozzo took on his sole ownership of Watford FC.

Prior to that, he and his father, Giampaolo Pozzo, had completed a takeover of the Hornets from Lawrence Bassini back in the summer of 2012.

Since 2014 though, it is Gino who has stepped in as the single owner of the club, with Giampaolo instead focusing on the running of Italian side Udinese.

Under the younger Pozzo, who is heavily involved in daily business at Watford, the club have been promoted twice to the Premier League, but also been relegated on two occasions.

Last season saw them end the campaign 15th in the Championship table, their lowest finish under Pozzo's ownership.

As a result, it was perhaps no surprise to see a busy summer at Vicarage Road, with 12 new first-team signings, arguably showing Pozzo's backing for the club.

Gino Pozzo reported net worth

The Pozzo's original family business was the toolmaker, Freud, which Giampaolo Pozzo sold to German company Bosch in 2008.

Gino Pozzo meanwhile, has been involved in football throughout his career, having built a network focused on the talent scouting and development of young promising players.

That is something he has looked to exploit in the transfer market when working on recruitment in his role with Watford.

The start to this campaign has been a stronger one for the Hornets, who currently sit fifth in the Championship table.

Under Tom Cleverley, who took charge late last season, they have taken ten points from five league games so far.

As a result, they may be hoping that they can push for promotion to the Premier League this season, having not played in the top-flight of English football since 2022.

But if Watford were to win promotion this season, who would the net worth of Gino Pozzo, compare with that of the owners of the sides they might be up against in the Premier League.

Watford owner has lower net worth than Premier League figures

According to a report from TalkSport that was published in 2019, Gino Pozzo has a net worth of £93million.

At the time, that was enough to make the Watford supremo the 17th richest owner in the Premier League.

However, while there are little more details on whether Pozzo's net worth has altered since then, other things appear to have rather changed in the interim.

Earlier this summer, GiveMeSport published a report analysing the net worth of the owners of the 20 clubs who will be playing in the Premier League this season.

According to those figures, the current top-flight owner with the lowest net worth is Brentford's Matthew Benham, with a value of £216.3million.

That though, is of course still well over £100million more than the estimated net worth of Pozzo.

Indeed, it is suggested that 18 of the current Premier League clubs have owners with a net worth that is currently over £1billion, Nottingham Forest and Brentford being the two exceptions, more than ten times more than that of Pozzo.

As a result, while Watford will certainly not want to miss out on promotion to the Premier League this season, these figures do seem to highlight the financial challenge Pozzo and his club would be facing, if they do secure a return to the top-flight of English football.
