Footage of the moment in which players from both Barcelona and Villarreal came to terms with the serious nature of the injury suffered by Marc-André ter Stegen has surfaced online.
The name of goalkeeper Ter Stegen has of course dominated the headlines in Spain over the course of the last two days.
This comes amid what has proven an altogether challenging 48 hours for the German international.
Stretchered out of Barcelona’s La Liga meeting with Villarreal on Sunday, Ter Stegen was subsequently diagnosed with a ‘complete rupture in the patella tendon in his right knee’.
The 32-year-old, in turn, was forced under the knife, expected to spend the remainder of the season on the sidelines as a result.
Ter Stegen’s injury came about after the shot-stopper rose to claim a ball in the Barcelona penalty area, before landing awkwardly on his right foot.
Initially, it was not clear just what was wrong, as players from both sides rushed to check up on Ter Stegen.
It was only upon the German himself shouting ‘La Rodilla’ (the knee) that those around him came to the realisation that the injury was an altogether serious one, all at once calling for medical attention from the sideline.
Villarreal star Yeremy Pino, who suffered a major knee injury of his own just last year, was left looking particularly shaken up by the ordeal, footage of which can be seen below:
