With four clubs remaining, a slightly less familiar name will be engraved into the DFB Pokal this season, but who will make it to the final?

Hamburger SV v SC Freiburg

The fallen giant meets a club on the up. Hamburg are the only remaining side to have ever won the Pokal. They’ve done just that three times, losing three more finals, but their most recent success came in 1987. Fast-forward to today and HSV have won just two of their last eight league games; their aim to regain promotion to the top flight is slipping away once again.

Then there’s SC Freiburg, who have a very different trajectory. Into just their second ever DFB Pokal semi-final, they are hoping to reach their first ever final to go alongside a superb Bundesliga season that sees them in to four contention.

RB Leipzig v Union Berlin

A true culture clash as two clubs from what was East Germany meet in Leipzig.

Neither side has ever won the competition but both have tasted defeat in the final, most recently RB Leipzig (2019 and 2021), while Union were shock finalists in 2001, when they lost to Schalke.

The ultimate prize is on the line for both once again and they will fancy their chances of going all the way this time but Leipzig, with the most points in the Bundesliga in 2022, have to be considered favourites.
