Sergi Darder’s move from Espanyol to Mallorca in 2023 came as quite a shock to some fans of the Catalan club. As per Relevo, the midfielder was once quoted as having said ‘They would have to kill me for me to leave Espanyol.’
However when Espanyol were relegated to the second division of Spanish football things quickly changed. The man who had spent six seasons at Espanyol suddenly upped sticks and left.
With Espanyol toiling in La Segunda División during their last campaign, we had to wait a second season before Darder was reunited with his former club, and it’s fair to say the reception was frosty at best.
Espanyol fans broke out into loud boos the moment Darder’s name and number appeared on the screen at the Stage Front Stadium just outside of Barcelona.
There were then further boos and whistles as the former Espanyol man stepped up in the 10th minute to take a corner in his former home.
The Espanyol faithful are seemingly not willing to welcome their former midfielder with open arms given the nature of his departure.
