Pep Guardiola says he agrees with Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp’s assessment that the scheduling of fixtures is behind the disappointing performances from English clubs in Europe this season.

Aston Villa are the only English side to reach a European semi-final this season but will have to overturn a 4-2 deficit in their tie with Olympiacos, while Man City and Arsenal crashed out of the Champions League at the quarter-final stage, as did Liverpool and West Ham in the Europa League.

Ahead of Liverpool’s clash with Spurs, Klopp said: “That City and Arsenal are out in the (Champions League) quarter-finals is not a fair reflection.

“That we are out in the quarter-finals is not a reflection of quality, it’s just that we couldn’t deliver on the day. Other countries have really good teams but it’s a sign.

“That they dare to give Thursday, Sunday, Wednesday and Saturday 12.30 is a crime. I was actually waiting for Amnesty International to go to them.

“I would like to once be part of the meeting when someone says ‘Liverpool 12.30’ and the whole room bursts into laughter.”

And City boss Guardiola supported Klopp’s assessment that the fixture schedule is negatively impacting English clubs in Europe.

“It’s one of the reasons, yeah,” Guardiola said.

“I don’t know if it’s the main reason but I completely agree with Jurgen, it’s one of the reasons.

“It’s not going to change.

“Maybe next season there are three or four English teams in the final stages but for a long time it’s been more difficult.”
