During the joyous celebrations following Barcelona’s emphatic victory over Real Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup final on Sunday, Gavi demonstrated his affection for teammate Ronald Araujo, who is currently surrounded by swirling rumours about his future at the club.
While Barcelona bask in the glow of their Super Cup triumph, the club faces a less pleasant task upon their return to the Catalan capital: resolving the increasingly complicated situation surrounding Araujo.
The Uruguayan defender, whose contract expires in 18 months, has already turned down two renewal offers, and is leaning towards an exit in the ongoing transfer window. Juventus have emerged as a leading contender for his signature.
This tense situation may explain why Gavi offered a heartfelt gesture of solidarity to Araujo at the conclusion of the Super Cup final.
Captured by Movistar+ cameras, Gavi embraced the Uruguayan defender warmly and even called on the crowd to applaud him.
It was a clear sign of camaraderie and support, as well as recognition of Araujo’s exceptional performance after he came on as a first-half substitute for the injured Inigo Martínez.
Given his contract situation, Barcelona must urgently convene with the Uruguayan international to find a solution beneficial to all parties.
With Martinez’s injury now expected to keep him out for a period of five weeks, Araujo’s exit could end up getting blocked.
