Estevao Willian has followed in the footsteps of Neymar as Chelsea were offered another exciting reminder of the talent they have joining them this summer.
Last September after no shortage of transfer speculation the Blues clinched a deal with Palmeiras for the next potential superstar of Brazilian football, paying an initial fee of £29million that could eventually rise to as much as £51m with performance-related add-ons.
It was widely seen as a huge transfer coup for Chelsea, who have made recruiting top young talent from South America a priority over recent years, having also agreed deals for the likes of Aaron Anselmino, Andrey Santos, Kendry Paez, Deivid Washington and Angelo Gabriel.
Estevao is remaining at Palmeiras until officially heading to Stamford Bridge this summer after his 18th birthday, which is in April, having signed a long-term contract in west London.
Dubbed by many as ‘Messinho’ - ‘Little Messi’ - the teenage sensation has also drawn plenty of comparisons to and broken lots of records set by legendary compatriot Neymar, who himself has hailed Estevao as a “genius”.
He has continued to go from strength to strength during his final months in Brazilian football, including in Saturday’s 3-0 win away at Sao Bernardo in the Campeonato Paulista in Sao Paulo.
Estevao - also compared to Spain wonderkid Lamine Yamal - was once again the star of the show in a commanding victory for Abel Ferreira’s side with their rivals at the summit of Group D, scoring an eye-catching brace to take his tally in the competition this term to five goals in 11 appearances.
His first goal on Saturday came with just 15 minutes on the clock, showing his strength and skill on a difficult looking pitch after collecting a flick-on from a long pass from the goalkeeper before once again demonstrating his formidable shooting power and accuracy with a fierce left-footed drive that crashed in off the post.
Estevao then doubled Palmeiras’ advantage on the stroke of half-time, beating his marker and cutting in nonchalantly off the right flank before whipping another unstoppable left-footed strike low past the ‘keeper.
Estevao has now scored 20 goals and registered 10 assists in total in just 57 senior appearances for Palmeiras to date having risen quickly through the academy ranks after starting off at Cruzeiro, while he featured just four times for Brazil at Under-17 level before being handed his senior international debut and earning four caps so far under Dorival Junior.
Per Fabrizio Romano and DataFutebol, Estevao is the first Brazilian player since Neymar in 2010 to reach 30 senior goals and assists in his career before turning 18 years of age.
