“Wasn’t effective – 5” – Rangers rated v Lyon

So Rangers were fairly easily beaten by a clinical Lyon. How did our players do on a night of reflection?

McGregor:

Barely actually called upon, but didn’t look terribly fit. Stevie’s admission McGregor was not 100% was telling, and he looked a bit sluggish in this one. Probably shouldn’t have played. 5

Tavernier:

Tried 10 crosses, and only one was remotely accurate, Tavernier had a night to forget as his defensive frailties got exposed a few times. He was unfortunate with the OG but generally he just wasn’t effective. 5

Goldson:

Was maybe a little fortunate not to see red for a genuinely horrible challenge which was classic ‘high boot’, and otherwise saw that yellow put him on the back foot. He wasn’t particularly match fit, which we did talk about in the days leading up to this, and was a little rusty. Managed a few clearances though. 5

Balogun:

Actually had a very good night. Was determined to cover for Goldson’s off-night and did so valiantly. Lots of good reading, clearances and tackles and can hold his head high from this one. 7

Barisic:

Not at his best. Barisic’s confidence is on the floor and he looks right back to the player he was pre-St Mirren 2019. While his stats are actually not that bad, what we’re seeing on the pitch is nothing like what we’re used to from him. Bassey the far better option. 5

Davis:

Struggled to impose himself and in truth he’s not been his best this season at all. A lot of fans have been picking him as POTS so far, and we can only assume they’re seeing what they expect him to be like, not what he’s actually playing like. A subdued night from him and hooked rightly on 60 minutes. 5

Kamara:

Another one a distance from his best, Kamara let this one get away from him and didn’t look focused at all. 5

Lundstram:

Incredibly, despite a sluggish start, he picked up and ended up being Rangers’ best midfielder. He still wasn’t great, and seems off the pace overall, but at least he strung some passes together and managed more defensive work than his two colleagues combined. 6

Aribo:

Not a sparkling performance from Aribo, this was a rare one where he didn’t really get into it. Lost the ball a few times, and lacked his trademark dribbling. Booked. 5

Kent:

In truth he was Rangers’ best attacker, and while nothing came off for him, he did work at it. He tried. He got a couple of decent balls in, and managed a couple of shots. 6

Morelos:

He was basically AWOL in this one, just like v Saints he was barely noticeable. He really wanted that move this summer, didn’t get it, and now looks deeply unmotivated. 5

None of the subs had a major impact.

Manager:

Stevie got the team wrong here, and made a bunch of bad selections. McGregor wasn’t fit and shouldn’t have started, neither was Goldson but favouritism ruled the day on that one. The selection of Lundstram was not popular and while the former Sheffield man did ok, the midfield didn’t work at all. Up front was absolutely dire. This was not one of Gerrard’s better selections. 5
