Warta Poznań announced on Friday the surprise capture of Colombian centre-forward Frank Castañeda, from Moldovan club Sheriff Tiraspol.

Castañeda had reportedly been in talks with both Legia Warsaw and Górnik Zabrze – who have both lost key strikers – in recent weeks; but settled on the shock move to Poznań’s second club, who sit second-from-bottom of the Ekstraklasa.

“They were the only club to accept a short contract until the end of the season”, the player’s agent, Ton Caaen, told SportoweFakty after the striker penned a six-month deal at the Stadion Dyskobolii Grodzisk. Reportedly he has agreed a deal to play for Thai club Buriram United from the summer, although this has been denied by the player himself.

The 27-year-old made five appearances in this season’s Champions League, and captained the team in three of them – including Sheriff’s shock victories over both Shakhtar Donetsk and Real Madrid – before his contract expired with the Moldovan champions in December.

Warta coach Dawid Szulczek will be hoping the Colombian can transfer his form from the Moldovan league, where he scored an impressive 34 goals in 57 appearances.

17th-placed Warta travel to take on 16th-placed Legia Warsaw on Sunday afternoon.
