Liverpool’s transfer strategy has long been heralded as one of the most astute in world football, but Darwin Núñez’s trajectory at Anfield continues to divide opinion. The €75m (£64m) Uruguayan striker arrived with sky-high expectations, yet his role under new manager Arne Slot appears increasingly precarious.
Former Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock has added his voice to the growing chorus of concern surrounding Núñez’s place in the squad. Speaking about the forward’s struggles, Warnock observed, “It’s not gone Darwin Núñez’s way at Liverpool, has it? He looks a little bit lost at the moment and very low on confidence. I‘m not sure whether after scoring a few goals earlier in the season he thought he should have started more games, only for Arne Slot to change the XI, but I think it tells you a lot when the manager is playing a winger up front in Luis Díaz over him.”
The depth of Liverpool’s attacking options has been both a blessing and a curse for Núñez. Luis Díaz, typically deployed on the flanks, has often been preferred in a central role, raising questions about Núñez’s fit within Slot’s system. With Diogo Jota nearing a return to full fitness, the competition for a starting spot will only become fiercer. Warnock foresees even tougher times ahead for the Uruguayan.

“I think once Diogo Jota comes back into the team, Núñez will go even further down the pecking order,” Warnock said. “There just seems to be a lack of calmness in front of goal and an inability to settle himself or pass the ball into the net – the composure is just not there. I think it’s going to be difficult for him to stay in and around the team at Liverpool and contribute towards the end of the season.”
Confidence, or the lack thereof, appears to be at the heart of Núñez’s struggles. His early-season goals seemed to signal a breakthrough, yet inconsistent performances and Slot’s tactical tweaks have left him on the fringes. While Liverpool fans have seen flashes of his raw talent, the striker’s inability to deliver consistently remains a concern.
Warnock’s comments about composure highlight a key issue. In a system that demands precision and efficiency, Núñez’s erratic finishing stands out. As the Reds continue their push for honours, every missed opportunity comes under greater scrutiny.
Liverpool’s packed fixture list offers opportunities for Núñez to reclaim his place, but the margin for error is slim. Slot’s preference for tactical flexibility means that the striker will need to adapt quickly and showcase a more polished side to his game.
For now, the jury remains out. As Warnock’s remarks underline, Núñez’s future at Anfield is far from guaranteed. Should he fail to rise to the challenge, Liverpool’s forward line may soon have one less option in its arsenal.
