Reaction continues to pour in following the decision of Roma to dismiss manager Daniele De Rossi just four games into the season.

Walter Sabatini, the club’s sporting director from 2011 to 2016, weighed-in on the situation through his Instagram account—criticising the club for what he deemed an “unacceptable” choice.

“I’m disappointed,” Sabatini wrote. “Years ago, a notable figure in football made a statement that I can fully agree with: football is a stupid game for intelligent people.”

“Today, only the first part of that statement holds true. It’s pointless to expect anyone to notice the improvements within a team that’s still being experimented on– and equally pointless to expect them to realise the need to empower individuals like Boban and Maldini to help nurture their growth in general and footballing culture.”

“Three years ago, along with Massara, they spearheaded Milan’s rebuilding, leading to a Scudetto in a very short time. But sacking De Rossi? No, that’s unacceptable. Someone is living in a delusion of omnipotence.”
