And Tuesday night’s 1-0 defeat away at Scunthorpe United – the fourth tier’s bottom side – was the final straw for the club hierarchy who have dispensed of the former Premier League midfielder.

The Walsall job was Taylor’s first in senior management, having carved out his early coaching career at Swindon Town and Tottenham Hotspur.

Taylor took charge of one interim game at the Robins in 2018 before becoming Spurs’ under-18’s manager in the summer 0f 2019.

Walsall gave him his break though back in July and up until the end of 2021, the Midlands club were in and around mid-table in League Two.

Without a win since December 11 however and losing their last seven on the spin, Walsall will now be seeking a new man at the helm after parting company with their 40-year-old manager.

You get the feeling that this isn’t the last we’ve heard of Taylor in EFL management.

Results only tell one side of the story and despite those seven defeats on the spin, the general consensus from Walsall fans is that the ex-Bolton and Portsmouth player was dealt a bad hand by the board.

Sometimes though when results do spiral out of control then something drastic has to occur and the buck falls on the manager or head coach.

Maybe an experienced manager needs to come in to turn the tide round but it does feel harsh on Taylor considering it’s his first job.
