“Walked into mess” | Fans give full backing to Potter

West Ham fans on the whole are fully behind Graham Potter despite a tough start to life in east London.

Potter came into the club last month to take over from the woefully bad Julen Lopetegui, who despite much financial backing in the summer, look bereft of ideas and struggled to show any signs of getting the team playing under his leadership.

The Spaniards sacking in January was felt by the vast majority as one of pure relief, with Potter coming in and almost immediately there was a huge upturn in performance levels from the team.

However, results haven’t reflected that and the pressure is now beginning to build, following a poor overall display in the 1-0 loss to Brentford at the weekend, with Arsenal away up next on Saturday.

Despite the current mood around east London being one of concern and desire to see the back of this current season, fans are still very much behind Potter, as hopes raise that things will soon turn under the former Brighton boss.

“We aren’t in a relegation fight,” Hammers fan Rob told BBC Sport. “Potter walked into a mess, had key players injured and Ferguson has only been in the door for five minutes. I have far more confidence in Potter than Lopetegui.

“This season is now about preparing for next season. Kudus can go in the summer. He plays in the same position as Bowen and he will not replace him. Get a decent sum and use it wisely.”

Fellow West Ham fan Andy however is fearful of a relegation battle this season, as West Ham edge closer to the dog fight. He does admit that the impact of Potter isn’t something we can expect instantly.

“Potter is known for being a project manager and things won’t happen overnight during his tenure,” said the Irons supporter. “We are not at the start of the season and opportunities were missed in the January transfer window.

“My concern with the squad is that there is a lack of strength and depth in each position, along with the bad habits the players have taken on board under Lopetegui. Some simply aren’t good enough! We then have the issue of Potter trying to shake off his Chelsea experience, which has undoubtedly scarred him. As each defeat goes by, his last job will become more of a reminder.
