Jess Fishlock becomes oldest scorer in Women’s Euros history

Jess Fishlock became the oldest player to ever score in a match at the Women’s European Championship.

At 38 years and 176 days old, she surpassed the previous record holder by a full year.

Despite the heavy 4-1 loss to a strong French side, Fishock’s goal was a real moment to savour.

Wales spent much of the game on the backfoot, but Fishlock’s calm finish in the 13th minute pulled them level after Clara Mateo’s early goal for France.

France went ahead just before the break before adding two second-half goals to hand Wales their second consecutive defeat at Euro 2025.

However, Fishlock’s goal marked a huge milestone for the team. It was a tough night overall, but her goal was a reminder of her quality and a proud moment in Welsh football history.

What Jess Fishlock said after historic moment for Wales

Speaking after the game, an emotional Jess Fishlock downplayed the historic moment.

“I’m very grateful, and maybe after the tournament I’ll let that sink in a little bit more,” she said.

She also paid tribute to her teammates: “I am extremely proud of these girls tonight. We were in it, we were doing exactly what we were expecting to do and we’re so close.”

Wales coach Rhian Wilkinson was full of praise for Fishlock.

“I don’t think you have many players anywhere in the world who are such servants to their nation.

“She’s at the twilight of her career and she has demonstrated what it is to be a proud Welsh woman who will give everything to her country and to her team.”

Who is the youngest scorer in Women’s Euros history?

Fishlock’s goal not only marked a national milestone but also made her the oldest player to ever score at a Women’s European Championship.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, the youngest scorer in Women’s Euros history is Norway’s Isabell Herlovsen, who scored in 2005 at just 16 years and 351 days old during a match against France.

What’s next for Wales?

The result leaves Wales on the brink of elimination from Group D. To reach the knockout stages, they will need to hope France defeats the Netherlands and they’ll need to beat England by at least four goals this Sunday.

According to the UK’s top betting sites, Wales have odds as high as 45/1 to win against England.

Regardless of what happens for Wales next, the team will return home having achieved a historic milestone.

Fishlock’s goal was more than just a moment, it was a symbol of how far women’s football in Wales has come, and where it can still go.
