Wales are on the brink of World Cup elimination after a devastating 2-0 defeat to Iran in their Group B clash.

It was a tense 90 minutes between the two sides that appeared to be heading for a 0-0 draw.

It would have been Wales’ second draw of the tournament following their 1-1 tie with USA in their opener.

However, the match changed when Wayne Hennessey was sent off for a robust tackle when coming out of his penalty area to clear.

Wales had to survive the final four minutes of normal time with 10 men as Danny Ward came on.

But as we’ve seen throughout this tournament, there was lengthy injury time with nine additional minutes being shown.

Rob Page’s side just couldn’t hold out as Rousbeh Cheshmi’s strike gave Iran the lead in the 90+8th minute before Ramin Rezaeian finished the Welsh off just three minutes later.

Wales now need to beat England to stand any chance of qualifying for the knockout stages of the competition.

After 64 years of waiting, this isn’t how Wales fans imagined the World Cup would go.

Understandably, there were several angry Welsh supporters leaving the Ahmed bin Ali Stadium.

Also outside the stadium was Sky News reporter, Alistair Bunkall.

However, he probably should have been aware of what had just happened inside the stadium.

That’s because, as Sky News cut to him live, he asked the Welsh fans for their immediate reaction to the ‘win.’

The win?

That’s one way to annoy a group of fans. Telling them they had just won when they had lost in devastating circumstances.

Then, when he did ask about the loss, one Wales fan summed it up with one explicit word.

While you have to feel sorry for Alistair’s slip of the tongue, it did make fantastic TV for us.

After the match, Wales star man Gareth Bale admitted that it’s going to be tough for them to reach the last-16 now.

“It’s gutting – there’s no other way to say it,” Bale said.

“We fought till the end but it’s difficult when you go down to 10 men in the World Cup against good teams.

“We have to keep going and we have to pick ourselves up straight away. It will be difficult now, but we have to try to beat England – it’s as simple as that.”
