Arsenal striker Vivianne Miedema has been tipped to sign a one-year contract extension with the club, with her current deal due to expire in the coming weeks.

The Gunners have already secured new contracts for Leah Williamson, Lotte Wubben-Moy and Steph Catley in 2022, but Miedema’s absence from that list has been of great concern to fans.

The Dutch star, who is the WSL’s all-time leading goalscorer, was a target for French giants Lyon last summer and has been increasingly linked with reigning European champions Barcelona this season.

The Athletic has claimed that Miedema is ‘closing in’ on a new deal and was present at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday to film content for an announcement this week.

Should that prove to be the case, the speed would come as something of a shock.

Miedema had told media immediately following the final WSL game of the season on Sunday that she had not yet come to a decision about her future and would delay finalising anything until after returning from a two-week holiday.

She reiterated the importance of Arsenal being able to match her ambitions, but did mention that talks with manager Jonas Eidevall, who has himself just signed a new contract, would continue.

“I will have a couple of weeks holiday and will make a decision then,” Miedema said at the weekend.

“I'm speaking with the club and Jonas Eidevall. I really want to win titles. This year I haven't won anything. If I feel like the club is moving in that direction then maybe I stay another year or two years. Right now, I have not made my decision.”
