Arsenal forward Vivianne Miedema has pledged her immediate future to the club by signing a new contract and ending speculation about a summer move to Barcelona.

Miedema’s previous deal was due to expire next month and she had delayed a decision about her future in order to weigh up whether she felt the Gunners matched her ambition to consistently compete for trophies at the highest level – including the Champions League.

The Dutch superstar, who is the WSL’s all-time leading goalscorer and finished this season with the league’s join-most assists, had initially said she would make her choice after a two-week holiday. But there were recent reports that a deal had been struck much sooner, which is now indeed the case.

“I think the most beautiful thing about the game is building something with a team and with people around you that you really want to be around,” Miedema told Arsenal’s official website.

“I do feel like I have got that at Arsenal. I feel like for me, winning titles with Arsenal will mean a lot more to me than winning them with another club at the moment. And that’s what I obviously hope to achieve with Arsenal.”

Gunners boss Jonas Eidevall added, “Viv is a stellar talent and a hugely important player for this team, so it’s fantastic news that she is staying with us.

“As a club, our ambition is to win titles and compete at the highest level – we know Viv’s own ambitions are the same, and together we will give everything to achieve that.”

Arsenal have not disclosed the length of the contract.

Miedema is the latest Arsenal player to pen fresh terms following in the recent footsteps of full-backs Noelle Maritz and Steph Catley and centre-back Lotte Wubben-Moy. New England captain Leah Williamson also signed a new contract at the start of this year.
