A 37th-minute goal from Bruno Alves was the difference as São Paulo defeated Vitória 1-0 in Salvador on Friday night.
São Paulo finally broke a six-match winless run which saw them drop from first place to fourth in a matter of weeks.
SPFC could potentially rise up to second place next Sunday when they host Flamengo in one of the most important matches of the season.
Meanwhile, Vitória stayed in the relegation zone in 17th place just one point from safety with the rest of Round 31 still to be played.
After each team began the game with nice chances, the breakthrough finally came just before half-time.
Reinaldo slipped a nice ball in for Joao Rojas, who cut the ball back to Bruno Alves who smashed the ball home from 12 yards.
SPFC reserve goalkeeper Jean earned a fine clean sheet and made three saves en route to victory.
After the final whistle, however, the former goalkeeper of Vitória’s rivals Bahia provoked the fans with obscene gestures and was given a red card for his actions.
