Reds centre-back Virgil van Dijk has stated that he has been thinking about Liverpool’s comeback against Barcelona ahead of tonight’s Champions League clash against Atletico Madrid.

Liverpool lost the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie against Atletico Madrid 1-0 at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium.

Saul Niguez’s first-half strike ultimately gives the Spanish giants something to defend come the second leg at Anfield tonight.

Liverpool were not awful in the first leg, but they ultimately lost the match. Ahead of tonight’s huge game, Van Dijk has been thinking back to Liverpool’s come from behind victory against Barcelona last season to give him some inspiration for tonight.

“We couldn’t give any chances away against Barcelona, either,” said Van Dijk, as quoted by Sky Sports.

“We will go with the same mindset as always. Hopefully win the game and play good football, but first and foremost, we have to deliver a lot of passion and hard work.

“We have to get everyone going from the first second to the last. Things can happen and they could be the better team but we all want to show why we want to go through with our qualities and deserve to be in the next round.

“Atletico will be tough, they are a fantastic side. They are one of the best in how they play.

“They are aggressive and they have fantastic players who can hurt you on the break too.”

The Barcelona game is very much a reminder that nothing is impossible. The task that Liverpool are faced with tonight is not as daunting as what Barcelona threw at them last season.

However, there is no denying that Liverpool will have to play much better come the second leg if they are to progress to the next round.
