Virgil van Dijk isnât just a classy player, but a classy human being too.
The Liverpool defender volleyed home a late equaliser to make it 2-2 against Germany on Monday and secure the Netherlandsâ place in the UEFA Nations League Finals.
And at the final whistle, the 27-year-old made a bee-line for Romanian referee Ovidiu Hategan, who was in tears following the recent passing of his mother.
âThe man broke down with tears in his eyes because he had just lost his mother,â Van Dijk told Dutch outlet Voetbal International.
âI wished him strength and said he had refereed the game well. Itâs a small thing but maybe it will help him.â
Despite their late comeback, Van Dijk was disappointed with the way his side performed in Gelsenkirchen.
âWe had a lot of the ball but were not able to put any pressure on them,â he added.
âGermany are, of course, a good team, they played well between the lines and with strikers that had a lot of movement.
âWe had trouble with that, it is something we have to learn from.â
