Virgil van Dijk isn’t just a classy player, but a classy human being too.

The Liverpool defender volleyed home a late equaliser to make it 2-2 against Germany on Monday and secure the Netherlands’ place in the UEFA Nations League Finals.

And at the final whistle, the 27-year-old made a bee-line for Romanian referee Ovidiu Hategan, who was in tears following the recent passing of his mother.

“The man broke down with tears in his eyes because he had just lost his mother,” Van Dijk told Dutch outlet Voetbal International.

“I wished him strength and said he had refereed the game well. It’s a small thing but maybe it will help him.”

Despite their late comeback, Van Dijk was disappointed with the way his side performed in Gelsenkirchen.

“We had a lot of the ball but were not able to put any pressure on them,” he added.

“Germany are, of course, a good team, they played well between the lines and with strikers that had a lot of movement.

“We had trouble with that, it is something we have to learn from.”
