Viola’s career

A talented and experienced midfielder with a sweet left foot and over 300 professional appearances under his belt, Nicolas started his career as an attacking midfielder as part of Reggina’s youth set-up. He has always maintained an adventurous spirit on the front foot even when being deployed deeper in midfield. He is very technically gifted, has a great first touch and his vision – both for short passes and long balls – is undeniable. He was, as a youngster, considered one of the hottest prospects in Italian football at the time and made his top-flight debut with the Amaranto at just 19 years of age. He subsequently played mostly in Serie B, turning out for Reggina, Ternana and Novara, both in behind the strikers or in a deeper role.

He made a telling contribution at Benevento as, in 2017, he helped the Stregoni to reach Serie A for the first time in their history. Over the following four seasons, he became a key player in the squad and attained an incredible average of goals per game in the season with Inzaghi, who took Benevento back to the top flight. Viola is very consistent both from free-kicks and the penalty spot. Nicolas, who manages to unite great physical condition with his wand of a left peg, plays with class and has an eye for goal; he showed as much last season with, in the girone di ritorno, he was one of the top performers in Serie A and even scored one of his five goals with a backheel at the Dall’Ara in February 2021.
