The recent Champions League showdown between Real Madrid and Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium served as a clear reminder of this lingering tension.

Manchester City supporters have not forgotten that Real Madrid chose to skip the Ballon d’Or gala after learning that the winner was Rodri rather than Vinicius.

They made their feelings about the situation abundantly clear during the high-profile European encounter.

City fans went all guns blazing

Before the match kicked off, City fans displayed an enormous banner featuring an image of Rodri kissing the prestigious Ballon d’Or trophy.

Alongside the picture, the words ‘Stop crying your heart out’ were prominently written, a direct reference to a well-known Oasis song.

The message was a pointed jab at Vinicius and Real Madrid’s reaction to the awards ceremony, suggesting that they had been bitter about the outcome.

The hostility towards Vinicius did not end with the banner. Throughout the match, every time the Brazilian winger touched the ball, he was met with a chorus of whistles and jeers from the home crowd.

To further mock him, the City supporters also chanted “Where is your Ballon d’Or?” questioning the absence of a Ballon d’Or in his trophy cabinet, making it clear that they had not moved on from the controversy.

Vinicius’ response was subtle

Despite the chants, Vinicius remains unbothered. Instead of engaging directly with the crowd, the Real Madrid forward simply pointed towards the emblem on his shirt that displayed the club’s record 15 Champions League titles.

He held his gaze on the badge for a moment, ensuring that the message was received loud and clear.

After the match, Vinicius was asked about his reaction to the fans’ provocation. While he remained composed, he acknowledged that this was a familiar situation.

He noted that Real Madrid have played at the Etihad multiple times and are well aware of the atmosphere. Rather than dwelling on the incident, he emphasised the importance of staying focused on their objectives in the competition.
