Sevilla went in front after 12 minutes at the Bernabéu when a corner into the box found Rafa Mir unmarked for a simple header.

Mir almost made it 2-0 two minutes later when Dani Carvajal gave him the ball inside the Madrid penalty area but after rounding Thibaut Courtois, his effort was cleared off the line by David Alaba.

Sevilla went close again in the 30th minute, when Lucas Ocampos beat Courtois with a brilliant effort from range, only to be denied by the crossbar.

And they were made to rue those missed chances in the 32nd minute, when goalkeeper Bono fumbled Éder Militão’s long-range effort onto the post, and Karim Benzema was on hand to tap in the rebound.

Into the second half and Marco Asensio went close to putting Los Blancos 2-1 when his curling effort just flew wide of the upright.

Vinícius Jr then had a chance to catch Sevilla on the break but with Benzema in support, the Brazilian shot high over the bar.

However, he made amends for that miss when he grabbed the winning goal in the dying minutes with a sublime effort from distance that gave the goalkeeper no chance.
