Former Roma player and coach Vincenzo Montella weighed in on the difficult moment reigning at Trigoria.
In an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport, Montella discussed the after-effects of Daniele De Rossi’s sacking.
“In recent years, every time I saw Roma at the Olimpico, I felt like I was reliving the atmosphere of the 2001 Scudetto. In just a few months, everything fell apart: the fans are now boycotting and refusing to come to the Olimpico.”
“Without Roma fans, there is no Roma. First of all, we need to recover the relationship with them. Romanism is not an empty word. Anyone who has experienced Roma knows this.”
“De Rossi’s dismissal? I was sorry because Daniele is a friend and he is a good coach. But I do not enter into the merits of the choice of the club. It would not be correct from the outside.”
“Roma have a quality squad, with lots of alternatives. On paper they fight for Champions League qualification,” he added.
“How would I react if Roma called me? I am very happy to be the coach of Turkey, but it would make me very embarrassed. Like anyone who would receive a call from a club where he spent most of his career and left a piece of his heart.”
