Vincenzo Montella has been sacked by AC Milan after 17 months as manager.
A 0-0 draw with Torino on Sunday proved to be the final straw.
Milan invested heavily in the summer in an attempt to re-assert themselves at the top of the Italian football but have endured a stuttering start to the season.
Gennaro Gattuso will take over as interim coach.
Though he hasn’t been given long, Montella has badly struggled to bed in the ten first team players signed for an accumulative €150m under new ownership.
Milan are mired in midtable in Serie A, winning six of their opening 14 games and losing just as many.
Things look a little better in Europe, where Milan are unbeaten in the Europa League and already qualified for the last 32.
Carlo Ancelotti will surely be one of the favourites to return to a club where he is already a legend.
Montella is the fifth coach sacked by the club since Clarence Seedorf took over in January 2014.
