Speaking at his post-match press conference (via @iMiaSanMia) following Bayern Munich’s 4-1 loss to Barcelona, head coach Vincent Kompany reacted to the loss.

In the first 30 minutes of the game last night, Bayern could have easily won having had the better chances and after having more control of the ball. However, their high line proved to be their downfall as individual mistakes alongside the pace of the Barca front three proved lethal as all four of the host’s goals came from Bayern’s aggressive high line.

On the loss, Kompany said:

“When we concede such a clear defeat, we shouldn’t be looking for excuses. We should just learn very quickly so we can show a better level against Bochum on Sunday”

The loss had also brought into question Kompany’s lack of tactical flexibility as when it was 3-1 even 2-1 to Barcelona, it would have made sense to change the tactical approach, this meant that the Belgian was asked about his style of play being too attacking in big games, Kompany replied:

“I think both teams did that today. If we look back to the press conference yesterday, the talk was about the fact we’re the team that conceded the fewest chances in Europe. We didn’t do everything right today, otherwise we wouldn’t lose 4-1. We must learn from this game and see what we can do better. That’s what will happen”

Finally, the beginning of his tenure saw Bayern handed a kind fixture list but in recent weeks Bayern have faced Aston Villa, Bayer Leverkusen, Eintracht Frankfurt, VfB Stuttgart and Barcelona and has only won once. On if last night’s hosts were the best team that Bayern have faced, Kompany said:

“Barça is a top team in Europe, so it’s not a surprise. These are the games we want to win and show the best version of Bayern Munich. Today congratulations to Barcelona for the win, for us it’s about learning from this to show a better level in the Bundesliga and then come back to the Champions League and get more wins”

At the weekend, Bayern travel to Bochum, a game on paper that they should win especially as Bochum have recently fired head coach Peter Zeidler but last season the Ruhr Stadion played host to a 4-2 loss for Bayern which was another nail in the coffin for Bayern’s title challenge with Leverkusen.
