Manchester City legend and now-Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany has admitted his happiness at dropping an underwhelming performance in his career.
The Etihad Stadium club first recruited Kompany as a defensive midfielder from Hamburg in August 2008, before the Belgian would go on to become one of the all-time greatest Premier League centre-backs and certainly one of the very best players to ever play for City.
But prior to his stint with the aforementioned German club, Kompany starred for his boyhood side RSC Anderlecht and his performances at such a young age grabbed the attention of Manchester United’s legendary boss, Sir Alex Ferguson.
In late 2003, it is widely believed that Kompany was a target for Ferguson to cover the long-term suspension of Old Trafford icon Rio Ferdinand, leading to an in-person visit at Celtic Park to watch the Belgian legend.
Speaking during a recent press conference, Vincent Kompany reflected on his UEFA Champions League debut with RSC Anderlecht back in 2003 against Celtic, with Sir Alex Ferguson in the crowd monitoring his performance.
“I remember it being a special night, but I think I was fortunate to play poorly, because I remember Sir Alex Ferguson came to watch me,” the Belgian defensive legend admitted earlier this week.
The iconic Manchester City captain continued, “If I would’ve played a good game, maybe he might have come in with a bid for me at the time. So I’m really happy I ended up on the blue side of Manchester.”
Ultimately, it is now known that Ferguson was instead impressed by Celtic midfielder Liam Miller and signed him over Vincent Kompany, whose mother would also not let him transfer until he had finished his education.
Across his Manchester City playing career, Kompany amassed 360 appearances across all competitions, scoring 20 goals across 11 seasons in Sky Blue and overseeing a large portion of the club’s greatest ever period as the team captain.
Among his 12 trophies won as a Manchester City player, Kompany played an integral role in the development of the now-all conquering side, lifting a staggering four Premier League titles in the process.
