Burnley boss Vincent Kompany believes he has a long way to go before he can be considered for the Manchester City managerial position.

The Belgian is set for a warm reception when he leads the Clarets against his former club in the FA Cup quarter-final at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.

Kompany captained Manchester City to their maiden Premier League title in 2012 under Roberto Mancini, before leading the Blues to further success under Manuel Pellegrini and Pep Guardiola.

Over three years on from bidding farewell to the blue side of Manchester, the 36-year-old is on the verge of helping Burnley get promoted to the top-flight following what has been a breakthrough managerial campaign for the former defender.

“I think it’s cliché that you pick up from every manager but the truth as well is that Pep (Guardiola) was the best manager I’ve every had,” Kompany said ahead of the cup tie, as quoted by Mike Minay of BBC Sport.

“And it’s definitely been a starting point for me and they other side of it I remember with (Roberto) Mancini, we did a lot of back line work and I really appreciated defending.”

After his side were drawn against the Clarets in the FA Cup quarter-final, Guardiola declared that Kompany would one day return to the Etihad Stadium as Manchester City manager.

Addressing Guardiola’s comments and a possible return to his former club as manager, Kompany added: “I think City should always have the best manager in the world, and that is not me.

“They (City) have the best manager in the world today and I hope he stays for another 10 years. If not, they should have the best manager in the world after Pep (Guardiola).

“From my side, I am way down the ranking so there isn’t even a second in my thoughts when I am busy with that. My goal is I am looking forward to coming up against better managers – I live for that.

“My biggest strength is that if I fail, I get back up, I come back stronger – and that process is more important for me now. The focus is just on Burnley getting better and we will see.”

Kompany will be keen to pull off a major upset in Manchester with his well-drilled Burnley side, who are sitting 13 points clear at the top of the Championship.
