VfL Bochum’s historic defeat of Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena on Saturday afternoon left FCB head coach Vincent Kompany too exasperated to speak German at the post match press conference. Ordinarily quite adept with the German tongue, the former Hamburg professional wasn’t in the mood after listening to his counterpart Dieter Hecking rail off a swift and poetic “Hochdeutsch” assessment of the match.
“In English if it’s okay,” Kompany began. “First of all, congratulations to my colleague Dieter and Bochum for this victory. From my side, no excuses. We can analyse what happened, but in the end I think we have to take responsibility for everything. We have to build towards our next game.
“I know the topics of discussion,” Kompany continued. “I know the criticism. It’s important to focus on the reaction [in the next match].”
Kompany switched back to German when discussing Joao Palhinha’s 43rd-minute red card that left the German record champions shorthanded for the entire second half. The FCB gaffer seemed more comfortable relaying his “no excuses” line once a German journalist lodged the query.
“We’ll naturally talk about this incident in the locker room,” Kompany said. “What’s important to me is that we don’t use that as an excuse. Even with ten-men, we were up 2-1. We still had the responsibility to win this game, or at least not lose it [via a draw].
“I also don’t wish to minimise what Bochum did,” Kompany continued. “Praise for how they maintained a feel that they could win this game. I could go on for 30 minutes at this presser, but you already know what happened. We lost.
“Pretty soon you’re going to bring up the matter that Leverkusen lost too, but I don’t care.” Kompany concluded. “And I don’t have an opinion [on Joao Palhinha’s red]. That’s an excuse and that serves no purpose today.“
