Quique Setién has been relieved of his duties as Villarreal head coach, becoming the first managerial casualty in LaLiga this season.

The Yellow Submarine have lost three of their four opening matches of the season, the most recent being a 3-1 defeat at Cádiz on Friday.

And the club confirmed on Tuesday that Setién has been dismissed, with sporting director Miguel Ángel Tena to take interim charge while a new coach is sought.

Former Barcelona and Real Betis coach Setién took charge of Villarreal in October 2022, replacing Unai Emery, and the 64-year-old went on to win 18 and lose 15 of his 39 matches in charge.

The club say that a change is needed to turn around an “important season” which will see them compete in the Europa League, with Panathinaikos, Maccabi Haifa and Rennes drawn in their group.
