Villarreal beat Real Madrid 2-1 on Saturday – but they will be wondering how it wasn’t 3-1.
The Yellow Submarine produced a shock with a 20-1 victory in an enthralling La Liga match.
While it may have been 0-0 at half time, the game was full of drama.
The first goal came just minutes into the second half from Yeremy Pino.
However, the away side equalised on the hour mark when Karim Benzema scored from the penalty spot.
But Carlo Ancelotti’s side were level for just three minutes before another penalty was awarded.
This time, it was for Villarreal and Gerard Moreno made no mistake from 12 yards.
It was a lead that Villarreal held onto.
However, they should be celebrating a 3-1 lead tonight.
That’s because, in the 98th minute – the final minute of injury time – Villarreal somehow didn’t add another goal.
Real Madrid had a corner and up came Thibaut Courtois.
Los Blancos opted for a short corner to the edge of the box to Marco Asensio. Quite why they decided against sending the ball into the box with Courtois up is quite baffling.
However, Asensio completely messed up his lines which gave Villarreal the perfect opportunity to counter.
The ball found its way to Arnaut Danjuma, who had teammates in support as he ran towards a completely empty Real Madrid goal. Poor Lucas Vázquez had no chance.
What would Danjuma do? Pass to a teammate? Roll the ball into an empty net?
Well, he ended up doing neither in the end.
Danjuma was clearly caught in two minds and Vazquez did his job perfectly. It left the former Bournemouth player rolling the ball wide with the goal gaping.
How on earth did he miss!?
Imagine if Real Madrid had gone up the other end and equalised.
Fortunately for Danjuma, he wasn’t made to rue his huge gaffe.
Instead, Villarreal moved up to fifth in the table just two points behind Real Sociedad in third.
As for Real Madrid, their second loss of the league campaign leaves them in second behind Barcelona. Barca now have a game in hand and could move three points clear of their El Clasico rivals.
