Villarreal have completed the signing of Thomas Partey on a free transfer from Thomas Partey despite the player being released on bail for five counts of rape and one sexual assault charge.
Partey was granted bail on Tuesday by Westminster Magistrates' Court for alleged offences committed between 2021 and 2022 while he was an Arsenal player.
Despite that, Villarreal have signed the 32-year-old on an initial one-year deal.
In a statement, the La Liga side said about the obvious controversy surrounding the move: "The club is aware that the player is currently involved in a legal proceeding in England. The player firmly maintains his innocence and denies all charges against him.
The club respects the fundamental principle of the presumption of innocence and will await the outcome of a judicial process, which will be responsible for clarifying the facts of the case. Due to the law in England in relation to ongoing proceedings the club is unable to comment further.
"Villarreal wishes to clearly reiterate its strong commitment to respect and diversity and firmly condemns any acts of violence in all its forms, gender-based violence, discrimination, racism, xenophobia, or any behaviour that undermines the dignity of individuals."
Partey played 167 times for the Gunners in five seasons for the club.
