Villarreal coach “concerned” about Juan Foyth amid Barcelona interest

Sergino Dest seems to be marching towards the exit door as the message from Xavi get clear. The manager did not include him in the squad list for the first game, instead opting to use Ronald Araujo as the right-back.

As the club tries to move Dest on, they have to sort out replacements this summer. On top of their shortlist is Villarreal’s Juan Foyth.

While Barcelona have not made an offer for the defender yet, it is expected that the Yellow Submarines will not sell him for anything less than his release clause of €42 million.

Club manager Unai Emery subtly confirmed that today, speaking about the Argentine as part of his pre-game press conference for Villarreal vs Hajduk Split.

“Foyth is very happy here, he tells me he is calm, but the market is open,” Emery said (h/t CarpetasFCB).

“We are concerned that there may be unwanted departures at the club. If someone pays the release clause or if the player has a very attractive offer, the situation can change,” he added.

There was additional fuel to the fire today as Foyth missed training due to ‘discomfort’, two days prior to their Conference League qualification clash.

Barça Universal’s take

Foyth is an excellent defender, and his profile matches that of Cesar Azpilicueta, which means he could definitely be a person of interest for Xavi. That said, though, the Argentine is not worth €42 million right now.

Not to mention, there have been far too many contrasting reports about his sale. Some have suggested that Barcelona are, in fact, looking for a more offensive profile than the 24-year-old, while others claim they could even pursue a swap deal by including Ez Abde.

In my opinion, Barcelona have their ‘defensive’ options sorted, even at right-back. Both Araujo and Jules Kounde can slot in there as more conservative profiles, and Sergi Roberto is capable of inverting.

Hence, I think the club should drop Foyth from their agenda, and try to go for a modern, overlapping right-back. Someone like Dest, in essence, but evidently of higher quality.
