Aston Villa Ladies have today re-branded as Aston Villa Women, ushering in a new era for the Women’s game in Birmingham.

For those who are eagle eyed, you may have spotted that on Monday morning the Aston Villa Ladies Twitter handle had changed from ‘AVLFCOfficial’ to ‘AVWFCOfficial’ – causing us to do a bit of digging.

The name change provides a more professional outlook for the squad and puts the side on an even footing with local rivals Birmingham City Women, who play in the league above Aston Villa Women – the Women’s Super League.

This comes on the same day as Staffordshire side Stoke City Ladies dropped the Ladies from their name to simply be known as Stoke City – moving in line with a more modern view on equality and language – and a ‘one club approach’.

Whilst Aston Villa Women aren’t moving to a a ‘one club approach’, this is still great move for the side.

Christian Purslow said of the name change:

Aston Villa Ladies have a rich and proud history and the time is now right to pursue progress under a new name that aligns more appropriately with women’s football in this country.   Improving our women’s set-up has been a priority since our new ownership group came to the club last year and we want to give our Head Coach Gemma Davies and her staff the best environment to prosper. Our ambition is for Aston Villa Women to be challenging at the highest level of club football.

There’s a number changes afoot at the club that they have recently announced, and these changes are improving the sides’ standing within Women’s football.

Chief Commercial Officer Nicola Ibbetson has been elected to the FA Women’s Super League and Championship board as one of two club representatives from the second tier.

The board help to shape the future of women’s football in this country and Ibbetson is delighted to be playing a part on behalf of Aston Villa.
