Aston Villa nearly pulled off a stunner at Villa Park, winning 3-2 against PSG in a thrilling second leg — but just missed out on going through, knocked out on aggregate (4-5).
The French champions were already 3-1 up from the first leg, and it looked like they’d pretty much wrapped things up within the first half-hour.
Achraf Hakimi took full advantage of a blunder by Emiliano Martinez to open the scoring, then Nuno Mendes made it two – leaving Villa needing at least four to go through.
But Villa weren’t ready to roll over. Youri Tielemans pulled one back after 34 minutes with a deflected effort, and then the second half turned into absolute drama in front of a buzzing Villa Park.
The hosts suddenly banged in two goals in two minutes to really liven things up – John McGinn smashed one from 20 yards on 55 minutes, and then Ezri Konsa gave them the lead on the night after some brilliant play from Marcus Rashford.
They kept piling on the pressure, but PSG keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma pulled off some cracking saves to keep them in it and make sure they went through on aggregate.
Luis Enrique’s side are now off to the semis, where they’ll face either Real Madrid or Arsenal.
