Cannon spent the first half of the Championship season on loan with the Potters, but has since been recalled by parent club Leicester City.

The decision comes amid speculation over his permanent future with the Foxes, with a number of Championship sides linked with a move.

It has been reported by Alan Nixon that Sunderland have made a £13 million offer to sign the forward, but they face competition from Sheffield United and Burnley.

Cannon has posted a farewell message to Stoke supporters following his exit from the club.

He has thanked the club for bringing him in over the last six months, where he scored nine goals from 22 appearances in the Championship.

“Thank you for everything @stokecity,” wrote Cannon, via Instagram.

Former Stoke teammates have poured into the replies to message the Ireland U21 international, with his future currently unclear.

This includes the likes of Manhoef, who responded with a heart emoji, as well as Burger and Johansson.

“Top player,” replied Burger.

Meanwhile, Johansson has wished him the best with whatever the next step in his career will be.

“All the best buddy,” wrote the goalkeeper.

Tom Cannon’s future

Leicester have recalled Cannon, but have yet to make a decision over his future amid such intense interest.

Former club Everton have also been credited with potentially making a move to bring him back to Goodison Park this move, via Give Me Sport.

It is unlikely he will play for Ruud van Nistelrooy’s side while clubs circle around his future because it would make him ineligible for his new side.

Cannon’s future will need to be decided before the 3 February transfer deadline.

Stoke are victims of Tom Cannon’s goalscoring form

Cannon has attracted such permanent interest this January because of his goalscoring performances for Stoke.

This is the precarious nature of bringing someone in on loan for a season because they can just up and go midway through the campaign, depending on the terms of that agreement.

Losing Cannon is a blow for Mark Robins, who is just in the door himself as Potters manager.
