In 2009, Darren Bent was playing for Sunderland against Liverpool in the Premier League at the Stadium of Light.
He decided to have a shot at Liverpool’s goal. The football was heading directly towards Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina.
However, a beach ball had been thrown onto the pitch moments before, and it landed in Liverpool’s penalty area.
Bent’s shot hit the beach ball, and the actual football took a deflection as a result. With that being the case, the football found the back of the net.
Former Red Phil Thompson was reporting on the game for Sky Sports. He could not stop laughing at how the football actually found the back of the net.
At the time, we weren’t laughing, as that moment cost Liverpool all three points. Sunderland secured a 1-0 victory.
However, looking back at it now, it was actually quite a funny moment. You don’t see goals like that everyday.
The video of Thompson’s reaction was provided by Sky Sports Retro (00:35).
