Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admitted Manchester United were a ‘tad lucky’ after benefitting from an overturned penalty decision in their edgy 1-0 victory over West Brom.

West Brom were controversially denied the chance to take the lead at Old Trafford after Conor Gallagher was adjudged to have been fouled by Bruno Fernandes in the area.

Referee David Coote had no hesitation in pointing to the spot but reversed his decision after being advised to check the pitch side monitor by VAR.

It was an incident Solskjaer believes ‘might’ have been a penalty.

Just minutes later, the away side were punished as Fernandes scored the winner with a retaken penalty.

The Portuguese midfielder’s first spot-kick was saved by man-of-the-match Sam Johnstone but the ex-United keeper was well off his line and he converted confidently second time round.

United held on for a nervy victory but Solskjaer stressed that the three points is all that mattered as we head into a defining period for the Reds.

Solskjaer’s side leapfrog Man City with victory and are now up to ninth place in the league after Pep Guardiola’s men were defeated at Tottenham Hotspur earlier on Saturday evening.

Another unconvincing display won’t fill supporters with confidence and there were few notable performers in a red shirt.

But United will be pleased to end a dismal run of four home league games without a win this season and will look to build some momentum as Champions League action returns with Istanbul Basaksehir the visitors on Tuesday night.
