Roma have shared their plans for a news stadium after an ‘enthusiastic’ meeting with the Mayor of the city Roberto Gualtieri on Wednesday.

The Giallorossi plan to erect an entirely new stadium, which would see them move out of the Stadio Olimpico for the first time since 1953.

The headline ambition is to build a new Curva Sud, which Roma expect to become the largest stand in Europe. The current largest free-standing grandstand in Europe is Borussia Dortmund’s Südtribüne at Signal Iduna Park with a capacity of 25,000.

The Giallorossi also aim to keep sustainability at the heart of the project, and have pledged to make the stadium mutually beneficial for Roma supporters and citizens of the city of Rome.

What Roma said about new stadium plans

Roma presented their project to representatives from the city and its council on Tuesday, including Mayor Gualtieri and head of city planning Maurice Veloccia. Roma vice-President Ryan Friedkin and club CEO Lina Souloukou were also in attendance.

The club reported that there was mutual enthusiasm for the ‘innovative’ nature of the project.

“It was an honour to meet with the Mayor of Rome, Roberto Gualtieri, today and present our vision for the new stadium,” Friedkin said in a statement on the club website.

“This extraordinary stadium is not only a new home for AS Roma and its fans, but also a point of reference for all the citizens of Rome. The new Curva Sud, set to become the largest Curva in Europe, will be a powerful focal point, embodying the passion and energy of our supporters.

“With its iconic design inspired by classical Roman architecture and state-of-the-art facilities, the stadium will offer a world-class experience for everyone from football fans to the local community.

“As the staunch custodians of AS Roma, we are committed to creating a space that embodies the spirit and tradition of our club, while also becoming a global symbol of innovation and excellence and a model of environmental responsibility.”
