Manchester United beat Brentford 3-1 during Wednesday night’s Premier League clash at the Brentford Community Stadium.

The Red Devils, guided by interim manager Ralf Rangnick, ran out deserving winners following a second-half flurry of goals from academy trio Anthony Elanga, Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford.

However, despite playing a key role in Elanga’s opener, one player who was unable to get his name on the scoresheet was striker Cristiano Ronaldo.

Subbed off with 20-minutes to go, the Portuguese forward appeared far from happy with his manager’s decision.

Visibly irritated, Ronaldo was picked up on BT Sport’s cameras throwing a tantrum as he stomped off the pitch and onto the bench with Rangnick then seen taking a moment out to have a word with his star man.

Discussing the nature of the pair’s conversation to reporters after the game, Rangnick said: “The only reaction I was he [Ronaldo] was asking me ‘Why me? Why do you take me off?’

“I said to him ‘Listen, I have to take the decision in the interest of the team and the club’

“We had exactly the same situation five days ago at Villa Park – being two nill up with 15-minutes to play and of course, we didn’t want to make the same mistake [losing lead] again.

“I decided to switch to a back five with Harry Maguire and bring on Marcus [Rashford] as another fast winger on the right-hand side and I think it was the right decision.

“But Cristiano was not happy – he’s a goalscorer. He would have wished to have stayed on and maybe score a goal himself.

“But for us, it was more important to be compact to make sure we had enough legs and enough also strong headers to defend their free kicks, their set-pieces.

“When we scored the third goal, I said exactly that to him – I said ‘Look, Cristiano, I understand you’re still ambitious and you want to score yourself but maybe in a couple of years when you’re a head coach yourself, you will hopefully take the decision and be in the same role as I was today after 75-minutes.”
