On this day in 1974, a Dixie Deans inspired Celtic team beat Hibernian 6-3 in the Scottish League Cup Final at Hampden Park.

The victory marked Celtic’s first League Cup triumph in five years, having lost in four consecutive finals in the intervening period.

Almost 54,000 people packed into the national stadium and they witnessed the highest scoring final in the competition’s history at that stage. Incredibly, the match also featured two hat-tricks as Joe Harper netted a trio for Hibs, whilst Dixie Deans scored three of Celtic’s goals too. Other names on the scoresheet that day were Jimmy Johnstone, Paul Wilson and Steve Murray.
